S960QL steel plate is a high-strength structural steel grade designed to offer excellent performance in demanding load-bearing applications. Classified under the EN 10025-6 standard, S960QL is a quenched and tempered fine grain structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 960 MPa, making it one of the highest strength steels available for structural use. The "S" stands for structural steel, "960" indicates the yield strength, "Q" refers to quenching, and "L" denotes low-temperature impact testing at -40°C.
The steel is alloyed with elements like chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and boron, which contribute to its high strength, toughness, and hardenability. Its microstructure is refined during controlled heat treatment, ensuring excellent resistance to brittle fracture and fatigue. Despite its high strength, S960QL maintains good weldability and formability, thanks to its low carbon equivalent and micro-alloying composition. It is available in thicknesses ranging from 3 mm to 300 mm, and is commonly used in industries like crane manufacturing, heavy transport, construction machinery, mining equipment, and offshore structures, where reduced weight and increased load-bearing capacity are critical.
The high yield-to-weight ratio of S960QL allows engineers to design lighter structures without compromising strength or safety, resulting in cost-effective fabrication and improved energy efficiency.
